As part of its home-based care programme, Cotlands runs support groups for the primary care givers of HIV infected children. These primary care givers are women of different ages, ¾ of them grandmothers who care for their orphaned grandchildren.
For many of these grandmothers, the main source of income is an old-age state pension of R780, which is not enough to support an extended family (some including up to eight orphans of school-going age).
The Adopt a Granny Project aims to involve companies, schools or individuals by adopting a specific granny with whom they can form a relationship and help with food, clothing or school fees.
RBS Johannesburg has adopted Granny Rose Ndlovu. Granny Rose looks after 7 grandchildren ranging from 3 to 22 years.
Her greatest needs were shelter, food, clothing, school fees and clothes for
the children.
RBS Katz Breskal has managed to fulfil most of these physical needs. Our ongoing relationship with the family provides the children with some hope for the future.
